NEW DELHI: Chinese consumer durables
major TCL plans to set up a colour TV and DVD player manufacturing unit
in north India by early 2010 for making India its global sourcing hub
and supply to players like Sony and Philips. |
"The company has grown at a rate around
20 per cent as compared to last year and we will set up a manufacturing
plant here to provide cost benefit and increase our market share," TCL
India Vice President Rajesh Rathi said. |
Recently, after a study by the company
to identify manufacturing sites in India, it had zeroed in on north
India, with Noida emerging as the prime location, he said. |
"The final plan will be chalked out
after consultation with the head office in China. Once we have a plant
here, it will not only cater to the domestic market but also cater to
global customers through companies like Sony and Philips, for which TCL
manufactures products on orders," Sethi said. |
TCL would also be able to place its products into big
retail outlets like Wal-Mart and Reliance in India through its local
manufacturing, he added. |
He, however, did not disclose the
capacity and investment of the plant saying, that it was still under
discussions. |
"When operational, the new plant will
make TVs and DVD players and if the demand rises other products will
also be manufactured in India," TCL India Assistant Marketing Manager
Sudhanshu Bhandari said. |
TCL India currently imports washing
machines, CTVs and DVD players from China and outsources assembling of
its AC units to domestic players. |
It sold 4.3 lakh units of CTVs and
72,000 units and 1.3 lakh units of washing machines and DVD players
respectively in 2006. |
