MUMBAI: The total electronic equipment production in India is expected to reach $32 billion in 2011, a global research and advisory firm said on Thursday.

In 2006, electronic production in India was at $14 billion, Gartner Inc said in a statement. Semiconductor consumption in India is expected to more than double to $7.2 billion by 2011, from $2.8 billion in 2006, it added.

"The growth in electronic equipment production is being bolstered by the rapidly growing demand for electronics equipment in India," Gartner said.

Consumer electronics was the dominant segment last year in terms of production with 39 per cent market share driven by demand for televisions, and audio and video equipment.

Electronics for communication and data processing was next in demand with 38 per cent and 12 per cent respectively of the overall Indian market, it said. "As local manufacturing of electronics grows to keep pace with the increasing demand, semiconductor consumption will also grow at a healthy rate," principal research analyst Ganesh Ramamoorthy said.
