Panel Discussion on IT HARDWARE - Co-hosted by SPEL Semiconductor Limited

SPEL, in partnership with The Southern India Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SICCI) organized a Panel Discussion on IT Hardware - Unleashing India’s manufacturing Potential on Jun 16, 2006 at Hotel Taj Coromandel, Chennai, India.

The proceedings were started off with an welcome speech by Mr. Ar Rm Arun (Chairman – SICCI IT Committee). He re-defined IT Hardware from the global perspective and suggested that perhaps Electronics Hardware Manufacturing better represented the various section of the industry. He highlighted that while India was booming, Tamil Nadu was definitely zooming.

The stage was set by Dr. C. Chandramouli, I.A.S., Secretary Information Technology, Government of Tamil Nadu. In his presentation, he chalked out the Specific Investment opportunities in Tamil Nadu. He discussed at length on the various initiatives taken by the Government of Tamil Nadu. His detailed presentation was loaded with statistics on infrastructure, Manpower, various cost factors, and the special incentives for those setting shop in Tamil Nadu. While encouraging new investments he reiterated that it was indeed appropriate to say that Tamil Nadu was Zooming.

The Panel discussion was initiated with Mr. Sam Varghese (CEO SPEL Semiconductor Limited) who was the moderator for the evening. The Panel members represented the various sections of the industry as they gave their perspectives in brief presentations. The panel members for the evening were

1. Mr. K.S. Viswanathan, Chief Executive - Strategic Sales & Product Business - WIPRO InfoTech
2. Mr. Jukka Lehtela, Director - India operations, Nokia India Pvt Ltd
3. Ms. Poornima Shenoy, President, India Semiconductor Association
4. Dr. S. Srinivasan, Head of Department - Electrical Engineering, IIT Chennai
5. Mr. J. B. Shin Chief Representative, Samsung Corporation

This was followed by and highly interactive session of Q & A and discussion between the Panel members and members of the audience. The discussion ended with thought provoking closing remarks from Mr. Ar Rm Arun.

There was a good mix of audience with majority of representatives from IT Hardware Manufacturing Companies, Semiconductor Industry, PC Industry, & EMS. There was also representation from Govt. departments, banks, Financial Institutions, and other allied industry sections.
